Road Rage!

Fifty years ago there were plans to destroy the Village and parts of the Cator Estate and elsewhere.

In the 1960s the GLC planned to build an eight-lane motorway through Blackheath. It would have
destroyed much of the local area including the Village. This was just one of several plans to build
major roads through Blackheath developed between the 1920s and the 1980s. Paul Wright,
Blackheath Society member, will tell a story of low cunning on the part of the planners and
resolute opposition by local residents.
