SUMMARY:The Pleasures of Dance in Art
DESCRIPTION:Anne Haworth\nTUES 6TH JUL 5.30pm | Online Via Zoom From masques to masquerades, from balls to ballet and from the formal spectacles of princely courts to the spontaneous joys of village weddings – the pleasures of dance have long played an integral role in the rituals of western society. Artists including Pieter Bruegel, Jan Steen, Pietro Longhi and Antoine Watteau have created vivid visual records of those ephemeral joys and transient entertainments held in sumptuous ballrooms, verdant parks or on modest village greens. The lecture will include a range of paintings from the anonymous stylised figures shown in Medieval manuscripts to the carefully honed movements of Parisian ballet dancers in the Impressionist paintings of Edgar Degas. These images of dance, costumes and celebrations are guaranteed to set your foot tapping! Anne Haworth is a lecturer at the V&A, the British Museum and for the Royal Collection Trust and has lectured widely as an Accredited Lecturer for The Arts Society. TICKETS To join this event we ask that you donate £10 to Blackheath Halls here. Once received we will email you with the zoom link.\n
